background development

It's week two of my fabulous collage class and we're currently creating backgrounds that will serve as the foundation for compositions we'll develop later in the course. I'm having such a blast experimenting with various substrates and materials. So far, I've produced fourteen (!) backgrounds.

I used sewing-pattern paper for this one:

This one is made from teabag-soaked paper towels:

I used torn-up pieces of paper from a patterned paper sac here:

Another instance of sewing-pattern paper:

Used teabags, sans tea:

More tea-soaked paper towels. The texture and modulation of color is amazing:

A map of the Four Corners area. The significance is obvious:

Aged sheet music overlaid with gauzy white paper:

Masking tape on cardboard:

Old, yellowed, crumpled graph paper:

Commercially-bought red scrapbook paper, overlaid with the same gauzy white paper as on the sheet music:

More sewing-patter papern, but this one is a gorgeous blue-green color:

White fibrous paper, sewing-pattern paper, and a piece of aged black landscaping plastic, all adhered to a black mat board:

Eucalyptus bark on brown paper:

Plenty of grist for the mill, as they say.
Finished collages, made from the above backgrounds, will most definitely be posted here.
