diving into clay

For the past month or so, I've had the privilege of doing pottery at the ceramics studio of a local and talented artist. I spend about three hours each Wednesday morning playing and creating with clay. It's been about ten years since I've done any ceramics so it has been a joy to get back to it. Surprisingly, it feels quite natural and familiar. Plus, it's a nice change from/addition to my collage-making.

So far, I've made seven pieces, which have yet to be glazed and fired. Here's a view of six of them (I was still working on the seventh when I took these photos):

Below are close-ups of the six unfinished pieces:

A few photos of the studio itself give an idea of the space in which I work each week:

As I continue working, I'll keep posting my progress. I guarantee that the finished products will look remarkably different from the unfired/unglazed pieces I've posted thus far, as there are so many variables involved in the next two parts of the process.

Thank you for posting all these photos!

It's nice to see your work and the space you do it in; I confess the one item that grabs my attention most strongly is the deep bookcase with shelves of many different dimensions in photo 1. That's my brain lighting up with rectangles, squares, lines, and organization.

It's a cozier space than I had envisioned with pottery piled everywhere. Do you ever fear knocking anything over?

Yes, I worry about knocking over my pieces in progress all the time. But I especially worry about knocking over Mary's pottery because that would be horrendous and embarrassing and generally in very bad form! So I tread lightly in the studio, needless to say.
