packing the penguins

Today I spent the entire afternoon cleaning and packing my beloved penguin collection. Alex and I are (finally) starting the process of sifting through our belongings, keeping what we really need and/or want, and saying goodbye to the rest. This clutter clearing is an essential step toward readying the house for sale.

At last count there were close to 200(!) objects in my penguin collection. This menagerie includes stuffed animals, jewelry, books, toys, salt & pepper shakers, Christmas ornaments, antiques, and figurines made from glass, stone, jade, porcelain, metal, wood, and more. My favorite? I do love some more than others, but if I had to give up all but one, I'd have to keep Waddles. She's the stuffed penguin who started it all, thirty-some years ago. I'm loyal.

The result of this laborious project is a saleable video/CD cabinet and a neat stack of banker's boxes: 2 to keep, 1 to purge. I had hoped for closer to 50/50 but, as I would tell any of my clients, I should be very pleased with myself. And so I am.

What do you collect?

I am a recovering hoarder.

That which I have collected most often is books and I'm pleased to say that my collection is of a very unimpressive size. I try to think of my collection as being housed in my local public library, a national award winner located within within walking distance.

I have also occasionally become a "crazy pet lady," keeping enough pets to stock a small pet shop. I'm down to one right now and I intend to keep it that way for at least the remainder of Spot's (hopefully long) life.

The one thing I currently stockpile are educational materials about Focusing (a type of meditation). I hope someday to have a monthly Changes (a free, peer led Focusing) group in my house where we might, as a group, watch videos from different teachers before practicing ourselves.
