Just this past Sunday we took our aerial journey together, the weather being perfect for flying, and had a marvelous time. Our pilot flew us along the Santa Barbara coast, down as far as Carpinteria, then over the mountains to the Santa Ynez Valley, and back again. The views were breathtaking!
I am so fortunate to have been given this special treat. It is particularly appreciated because I will be leaving the area in the near future (I hope) and am wanting to "do" Santa Barbara as much as I can before then.
Here I am with the pilot, who was immensely informative and friendly, putting us immediately at ease:

We've just taken off here, giving us a clear view of the Goleta Beach and Pier:
Looking behind us, as we ascend, we can see UCSB:
Santa Barbara, gently cupping the ocean, stretches out in front of us:

A gorgeous view of Cachuma Lake:
As we descend, we pass right over our mobile home park. Can you pick out our house?

Oh, how fun. I have been on two helicopter rides in Hawaii and on a bi-plane in Hawaii also, and they were all great, except on the first helicopter ride I felt too warm and was trying to take photos and almost got sick. The people sitting next to us were a little worried, but I made it. I still liked the ride anyway. The bi-plane was my favorite--out in the open so I was definitely not warm, and flying right over the smoldering volcanos and swirling lava. It started to rain on the way back to the airport, and we just made it back before a huge rain storm. That may have scared me a little if we were still in the air, but it was a great ride.
I had never before been in a small plane (nor had my father), so this was a special event. I thought I might be a bit afraid, but I really wasn't. I'd definitely do it again.
