juicing

Alex bought this Jack La Lanne Power Juicer with his birthday money last month and since then we've been juicing almost daily. I'm loving it! I'm getting more fruits and vegetables in my diet than I have in a long time. Also, because I often prefer to drink my food (yes, I admit that I have food "issues"), juicing is right up my alley.

My favorite recipe is for a drink called "Hot Tomato" (essentially virgin Bloody Mary mix). To make, I juice the following ingredients, in this order, and season with salt and pepper to taste:

1 medium tomato
1 medium carrot
1 celery stalk
1" cube ginger root
1" cube horseradish root
few sprigs fresh cilantro
1 radish
1 clove garlic

I've also been making plenty of carrot-apple-ginger juice recently. But mostly, I just make up my own concoctions of either vegetable or fruit juice, using whatever combination of fresh produce we have on hand. The only drawback is the fairly labor intensive clean-up involved, although I've got it down, now, to only 10 minutes (I've timed it).

For now, at least, I'm thoroughly enjoying the whole juicing experience.

Hey, we have an older version of one of these that Scha used to use ALL the time, but it did require a pretty big clean up. I was kind of glad when it stopped because there was pulp everywhere and bags of fruit and vegetables taking up all the space. This would probably be a good thing for us to do again for the kids so we can disguise vegetables for them since they pretty much will not eat them, especially Brandon.
