Here it is! Our land. The carrot on a stick that motivates us, daily, to get out of California and start our new life in Colorado. You're looking at my adorable husband, Alex, celebrating our 36 acres of raw, high desert land with a gorgeous view of Mt. Blanca (14,345 ft.) in the background. The property is situated in the San Luis Valley, about 1 hour north of Taos, New Mexico. We are cradled by the San Juan Mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east, which includes Mt. Blanca. The closest town is San Luis (pop. 800), purported to be the oldest town in Colorado. The closest city, where we'd do our shopping and so forth, is Alamosa (pop. 8682).
The landscape is stark, harsh, treeless, dry, and scrubby...but breathtaking. Each time I return, I am more drawn in by its subtle and stunning beauty and look forward to my next visit. It's been a year since we last spent time there and I'm anxious to get back. However, we won't visit again until we've made our move to Colorado. We hope to make that pilgrimage sometime before the end of this year. More on that later...
8.17.07: I was just reminded by an anonymous commenter that there is a thorough and informative website pertaining to the San Luis Valley in Colorado. It includes webcam views of the area, weather reports, history, current events, and more. www.slvdweller.com
