on my way

My suitcases are packed. My documents are in order. The house is clean. I'm ready to go. And restless. I've been restless for weeks now, anxious about the trip, though mostly in a good way-- excited and eager. It's been years since I've been gone from home for more than a couple of weeks (I'll be away for a total of 27 days).

Mostly, I'm thrilled. But I'm also a tiny bit torn, leaving Alex for such a long stretch of time. We've never been apart for more than a few days, maybe a week. I feel guilty flying off to exotic places while he remains here, working on the house. (Mom invited only her children, not their spouses/partners.) Plus, I won't be here for our first wedding anniversary on June 10th. That's probably the worst part. But we've decided to have an early celebration the night before I depart. We have reservations at one of our favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara, Spiritland Bistro. And Alex remembered that the bakery which made our wedding cake offered to bake us a cake "top" on our first anniversary (much better than eating one that had been frozen for a year). Today I pick up a miniature version of our lemon wedding cake with lemon Bavarian filling and buttercream frosting. mmmm.

On June 10th I'll be in Dubrovnik, Croatia, soaking in the sights and sounds and smells, but also looking for a pay phone to call my husband to wish him a happy anniversary.

That was a good cake. I love lemon. Have a safe trip, and Happy 1st Anniversary in advance!
