Mediterranean Mosaic: Tunisia

On the 7th day of our voyage -- on June 5, 2008 -- we visited the exotic and historically rich Tunisia, in North Africa. Looking back, I can say with confidence that Tunisia was one of my favorite destinations.

Our first stop was at the ruins of ancient Roman baths. Below is a reconstruction drawing of the site.



The marvelous remains of the baths hinted at how impressive the structures must have been.

After visiting the baths, we were taken to the seaside town of Sidi Bou Said. It totally entranced me with its colorful wares, blue-and-white adorned architecture, and exotic flavor. These are some of the ceramics on sale along the main street that now I wish I had purchased (although I did buy a beautiful little tile later that day in Carthage):



We also visited a "typical" Tunisian residence:





These gorgeous blue doors were simply everywhere, inviting photographs at every turn:









The ubiquitous bougainvillea was an ideal backdrop for a self-portrait:
